Why the Mercedes Sprinter Is One of the Most Versatile Work Vans
29th Mar 2018
As a plumber, electrician, HVAC contractor or extensive service company, you need a van to haul your equipment, materials or even a few employees. It’s vital to determine the best vehicle that will work with your requirements while also providing enough cargo space with lifetime value.
Mercedes-Benz is offering the 2022 Sprinter van lineup that can fit into a variety of vocations. In general, vans provide different industries with versatile components to transport anything you need. The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is full-size and available in the following four models:
- Cab chassis van
- Cargo van
- Crew van
- Passenger van
Different Features of Mercedes-Benz Vans — The Sprinter
The Sprinter is a high-quality work van, but how can you make sure you get the best Sprinter work van for your money? The best answer is to build your own van using customizable options. Below are some of the most important Mercedes Sprinter specifications and features to consider before you buy your own commercial van:
1. Engine Options
As a versatile full-size van, the Sprinter has three powertrain options you can choose from for a passenger, cargo or crew van:
- 4-cylinder gas: 188-horsepower, 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder, nine-speed automatic transmission that has front- or rear-wheel drive. This engine offers a great amount of power for light-duty work.
- 4-cylinder turbo-diesel: 166-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-pot, seven-speed automatic transmission with a combined 266 pound-feet of torque.
- 6-cylinder turbo-diesel: 188-horsepower, 3.0-liter V-6, seven-speed automatic transmission with a combined 325 pound-feet of torque. Four-wheel drive is available for this option, if desired.
2. Wheelbases
With the ability to haul people and cargo, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter allows you to choose between three wheelbase options:
The 170-inch and the 170-inch extended wheelbase come standard with a high roof, but if you select the 144-inch wheelbase, you can choose between a low or high roof. Depending on what your profession requires, you have the freedom to select the best option.
3. Space Capacity
The Sprinter offers a lot of space for any option you select, but if space is an important factor for your business, the type of van you select will have slightly different features that can make a difference. A 144-inch wheelbase Sprinter has approximately 11 feet of cargo space length, while the 170-inch extended wheelbase version has over 15 feet from the driver's seat to the rear doors.
The high roof is also ideal if you’re hauling around cargo and equipment that does not fit in regular vans, as it increases the space you have for loading materials.
4. Payload and Towing
If you plan to store and carry heavy equipment and supplies in your van's cargo area, you want to ensure that the vehicle's payload and towing is high enough for accommodating your items. The Sprinter's total payload and towing capabilities depend upon the model you select, with a gross vehicle weight rating of 8,550 to 12,120 pounds.
The Mercedes Sprinter can tow between 5,000 and 7,500 pounds and the payload for various iterations of the Sprinter van can range from 3,252 pounds to 7,506 pounds.
5. Safety Features
The Sprinter cargo van features high-tech safety gear, such as:
- Lane-keeping assistance with lane departure warnings
- Automated emergency braking
- Blind-spot monitoring
- Crosswind stabilization
- Collision prevention
- Excellent steering
This vehicle also has a great fit and finish, along with being able to obtain stability at speed.
6. Manufacturer's Warranty
Understanding the manufacturer's warranty is important for your van investment. Mercedes-Benz offers a limited warranty on the Sprinter van. Compared to other manufacturers, its powertrain coverage is long and offers a very reasonable price. Mercedes is unable to pay for scheduled maintenance, however.
Mercedes's warranties include:
- A limited warranty, which covers the van for up to 36,000 miles or three years.
- A powertrain warranty, which lasts for up to 60,000 miles or five years.

- Reliability: The vehicle offers incredible diesel engine power, advanced safety features and ample space for your gear and workers.
